The Honourable Company of Air Pilots incorporating Air Navigators

The Master

Master

Captain John P Towell FRAeS

John and his wife Linda are looking forward to his year as Master of the Honourable Company of air Pilots following his installation on 16th March 2020.

Since building model aircraft as a boy John had a passion for flying and was fortunate to be able to follow his dream to become a professional pilot. Whilst at Reigate Grammar School he joined the RAF section of the CCF and was awarded an RAF flying scholarship. John was offered pilot training with both the RAF and the College of Air Training at Hamble. He chose the civilian option and enjoyed a successful 37 year career with BA flying short haul, charter and long haul, and was also a trainer for over 20 years. His most rewarding period in BA were the years spent as Training Standards Captain on the clockwork and glass cockpit 747 fleets, a very interesting role on his favourite aircraft.

As a complete change from flying airliners he now enjoys spending time maintaining and flying a vintage dH82A Tiger Moth which was made by Morris Motors in 1940.

Within the Air Pilots John has been chair of the Benevolent Fund and served on the Aviation Careers and Education Committee. He helped to expand the London Schools Gliding scheme and encouraged other Livery companies to join the Air Pilots in support of their affiliated schools, as well as working to introduce Air Pilots gliding scholarships.

Having benefitted during his time in aviation from the support of mentors, and from the inspiration of role models, John now enjoys putting something back to help others to achieve their potential as pilots.
