Flight Lieutenant John Lewin’s aviation career commenced through an undergraduate aviation degree at Griffith University, where he quickly distinguished himself through his academic performance, professionalism, and leadership potential. During this period, his attributes saw him selected for a competitive internship with QantasLink Safety, providing him with early exposure to contemporary safety management systems, risk-based decision-making, and the practical application of safety principles in a commercial aviation environment. This experience played a formative role in shaping his approach to aviation, embedding a proactive and systems-focused safety mindset that continues to underpin his flying and leadership today.

His leadership capability was also identified early during his university studies, where he was selected as an aviation student leader, responsible for supporting and mentoring peers within the aviation faculty. In this role, he demonstrated an ability to influence, communicate, and foster a culture of professionalism—traits that have continued to define his progression into military aviation.

Following his entry into the Royal Australian Air Force, Flight Lieutenant Lewin completed the demanding pilot training continuum, where his performance was exceptional. He received five of the course’s most prestigious awards: the BP (Australia) Ltd Trophy for Highest Aggregate of Academic Marks; the Government Aircraft Factories and DJ Memorial Trophy for Highest Level of Aerobatic Skill; the SJ Goble Memorial Trophy for Most Proficient Pilot; the Defence Force Welfare Association Prize for Highest Level of Navigational Skills; and the Pilatus Aircraft Trophy for Dux of the Course. This rare sweep of awards reflects excellence across all facets of pilot training—academic, technical, and practical—and marked him as a pilot of the highest calibre.

Throughout his RAAF career, Flight Lieutenant Lewin has contributed to high-tempo training and mission-oriented flying environments, including joint-force exercises and operationally focused tasking. He has consistently demonstrated sound judgement, technical precision, and disciplined decision-making, underpinned by the strong safety foundation developed early in his career. His ability to integrate operational effectiveness with robust risk management has earned the respect of his peers and commanders alike.

Beyond his individual performance, Flight Lieutenant Lewin has continued to demonstrate strong leadership and a commitment to the development of others. He actively contributes to team performance, supports fellow aircrew, and reinforces a culture of continuous improvement and professionalism.
