Thanks to the generosity of sponsors, benefactors and charitable trusts, a total of seven Private Pilot Licence Scholarships and two Instructor Scholarship have been funded. The company have also awarded thirteen Gliding Scholarships.
Private Pilot Licence Scholarships:
The Air BP Sterling Scholarship (sponsored by Air BP a leading international aviation fuel products and service supplier) has been awarded to Stephen Daly. Stephen lives in Ireland however he is stayed with family over the summer to complete his PPL at Sherburn Aero Club. Stephen is currently studying and hopes to attend the University of Limerick in 2019 to study Aeronautical Engineering. Stephen was one of our Gliding Scholarship winners in 2017 and went solo at Portsmouth Naval Gliding Club during his week with us. On completion of his PPL, his school noted in their final report "... in the future, there will be a lucky airline somewhere!"
The Grayburn Scholarship (kindly sponsored by Past Master of the Company, Michael Grayburn) was awarded to Jake Kenny. Jake is studying for his A Levels at the moment in Maths, Physics and Biology. His ambition is become a short haul airline pilot and fly for a European Carrier. Jake took his PPL course at Almat Aviation in Coventry where his CFI commented that the Air Pilots should be very proud of the candidate they selected. The Cadogan Scholarship (generously sponsored by the Cadogan Charitable Trust). The scholarship this year was awarded to Fahim Ahmed. Fahim has sat Scottish Advanced Highers in Mathematics, Mathematics of Mechanics, Physics and Graphic Communication. He carried out his PPL training at Tayside Aviation and is pleased to report that Scottish weather finally provide an opportunity for him to successfully complete his skills test in early October. Fahim has a deferred place on the University of Glasgow MEng Aeronautical Engineering course to start September 2019.
The Sir Sefton Brancker Scholarship (funded by the Air Pilots Benevolent Fund) is awarded to Suleman Hussain. Sully has spent this summer flying with Lancashire Aero Club. Sully currently works for Swissport as an Airport Dispatcher. Aviation is Sully’s passion and after completing his PPL he hopes to continue on his chosen path, eventually becoming a commercial pilot.
TAG Farnborough Airport Scholarship has been awarded to Reshe Harrison. Currently studying a BTEC Extended Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering at Kingston College, Reshe hopes this will be the stepping stone to go to University to study Air Transport with Commercial Pilot Training where the end goal is to become a commercial pilot. Reshe trained at Redhill Aviation and has successfully achieved his PPL.
The Air Pilots Benevolent Fund sponsored Amy Palmer this year to undertake PPL training at Ulster Flying Club. Amy hopes to apply for the easyJet Amy Johnson Initiative which aims to double female pilots in the company within 2 years. She is also a keen astronomer and was lucky enough to attend ESO Astronomy Camp in Italy. She was 1 of 4 people in the UK who secured a place on the camp in 2015. In other news, Amy is this year's winner of the John Landymore Trophy, awarded each year to the student who is considered by the Scholarship Selection Panel to be the best PPL student of the year based on the reports received from the schools.
The Air Pilots Benevolent Fund also sponsored a further scholarship this year - awarded to Tsungi Maruta. Tsungi is flying at Booker Aviation. Tsungi currently works for BA as an Aircraft Mechanic. Not happy with just being able to fix them she would like to be able to fly them and hopes this PPL training will be the first step on her journey.
Flight Instructor Scholarships 2018:
The Swire Scholarship was awarded to Finian Salter who completed his FIC at Redhill Aviation Flight Centre. Finian currently works as a lecturer and 1:1 coach. With his passion for aviation and experience in teaching he hopes this will be the perfect career change for him. Of note - Finian, after gaining his certificate, taught some elements of the PPL course to Reshe, this year's TAG Aviation PPL Scholarship winner.
The Foyle Scholarship was awarded to Daniel Dedman, who trained at Andrewsfield Aviation. Daniel obtained his PPL at 18 and went on to achieve his CPL and ATPL at 19. He has a passion for aviation that he can’t wait to share with others who dream of gaining their PPL.
Gliding Scholarships 2018:
This year we awarded 13 Gliding Scholarships all of which were taken as week long residential course. 3 Students attended London Gliding Club in Dunstable and 10 Students attended Derby & Lancs Gliding Club.
Virgin Atlantic Scholarship Winners are Yugesh Sundharam (LCG) and Simon Goodden (Derby & Lancs).
The Air Pilots Flying Club Gliding Scholarships to Gavin O Dwyer (Derby & Lancs), Kieran Shingler (Derby & Lancs) and Thomas Barham (LGC)
This year the AST have sponsored a further 8 Scholarships. Ellis Collins (LCG). Josh Fagan, Emma McNeill, Ross Bradley , Harry Pink, Fraser Barnes, Tsz Kiu (Megan) Ip and Sean Johnson (all at Derby and Lancs).
